Stephen Schmidt, SAG Washington DC/Baltimore Branch National Board Representative

I have been a member of SAG since the early 1980s. I am also a proud AFTRA and AEA member.  I have lived and worked in New York, Los Angeles and for the last twenty years in the Washington DC/ Baltimore area. I am proud to serve my fellow SAG members from this area as their National Director.

I have always supported the concept of merger of all our performing unions.  It makes no sense to weaken ourselves at the bargaining table by continuing obsolete divisions between union performers.  Unfortunately our recent history suggests that some elected officials disagree with the concept of merger. These board members have done all they could to widen the gap between AFTRA and SAG and have thereby weakened SAG at the bargaining table and in the marketplace.

I support the work of United Screen Actors Nationwide and Unite for Strength and I urge all union actors to learn more about these organizations and to stay involved.  If working union actors, regardless of their current residence and market, don’t pay close attention to these issues now, they will only help to weaken all our unions in the future.  Please stay informed and involved in these vital issues.
